JEANNE LANVIN
As the eldest of 11 siblings, Lanvin (born in 1867) took a job with a tailor in the suburbs of Paris. Twelve years later she took the daring leap into independance, opening a hat shop. Since the severe children's fashions didn't appeal to her, she also started tailoring young girl's clothing: tunic dresses designed for easy movement, no more corsets or starched collars- revolutionary! The result: a flood of commissions. From 300 francs and the good will of her fabric suppliers, she made the history's first haute couture house. Her trademark was softly flowing fabrics, multilayered elegant cuts and the bold use of color. In 1946, Jeanne Lanvin died in Paris after a great career as an independent fashion designer.
