The Italien-born couturier, who began his career as a simple fashion illustrator and, after working with grand names like Jean Dessès and Guy Laroche, led his fashion empire from Rome together with his partner in business and life Giancarlo Giammetti, seems to be resistant to trends. Trends, in his view, are "only something for very young people and for those who are perhaps a sort of fashion victim." He himself would try "to create a young creation- glamorous, sexy, extremely feminine- not only clothes that last for a short, short season." Valentino was the last of his kind- a designer who learned his craft from the bottom up, and, together with Dior, Chanel and YSL, shaped the world of haute couture. One who, quite naturally, continued to hold on to his place of the previous one. And who finally, after almost fifty years of successful devotion to fashion, announced that he "preferred to leave parties when people are still dancing". With these words, Valentino presented his last collection in Paris, September 2007 at the age of seventy-five. His creations are elegant and dignified, always luxuriously cut, often embroidered with beads or sequins, or worked in lace. Valentino always prefered intense colors: "Rosso Valentino" is the only color to have been named after a fashion designer.
