"Europe has had enough of falling bombs, now it wants to set off fireworks" (Christian Dior). On February 12, 1947, the date Christian Dior sent out invitations to the presentation of his first collection. As yet, no one suspected that the designer, the son of an industrialist known only to fashion insiders, would unleash nothing less than a sensation. Although his first steps in life weren't as fashionable as one would guess: born in Granville (France) 1905, Dior studied political science, then opened an art gallery in Paris and finally appointed designer at Robert Piguet in 1938. His elegant designs mirrored the longing for a better world of a generation that had only just arisen from the ruins and that a few months earlier had been struggling to survive. But even if Dior turned fashion on its head with his hotly debated debut, his provocative luxury was not revolutionary. Coco Chanel, who once decided opponent of everything uncomfortable, mocked on contemporary's fashions: "These heavy, stiff dresses that don't even fit into a suitcase- ridiculous! Dior doesn't dress women, he upholsters them!", but Dior, however, appeared unimpressed. Girlish rounded shoulders, slim waistlines and wide calf-lenght skirts- this all was him and it still is today. Dior died as a result of a heart attack only ten years after his breakthrough.
